Before marking down slow-selling jewelry, identify what is actually slow: customer discovery, product understanding, conversion, or stock movement after returns. A lower price does not fix a missing measurement, a confusing variant photograph, or a fastening that customers cannot identify.
Check the listing and exposure first
Confirm the exact item, selling unit, current price, dimensions, and available options. Review whether customers can see the piece clearly and whether its description agrees with the images. Keep the time offered for sale and any stockouts beside the sales number.
Shopify's markdown guide treats markdowns as deliberate price reductions. The useful decision is why this item needs one now—not whether a generic clearance tactic exists.
Calculate what changes per sale
Consider a fictional item priced at $60, with $24 merchandise cost and $6 of other variable selling costs per sale. Before a markdown, the simplified contribution is $30. At a proposed $48 selling price, with those same assumed costs, contribution falls to $18.
| Illustrative measure | Before | After |
|---|---|---|
| Selling price | $60 | $48 |
| Merchandise cost | $24 | $24 |
| Other assumed variable costs | $6 | $6 |
| Contribution before fixed overhead | $30 | $18 |
You would need about 1.67 times as many sales to replace the original contribution, assuming the simplified costs stay unchanged. That arithmetic is not a prediction that the discount will generate those sales. Actual fees, returns, shipping, and taxes may change the calculation.

Do not call contribution net profit
The example excludes fixed overhead and other business-specific expenses. It is not Rustic Jewel Co pricing or a recommendation to change this pictured product's price. Use actual cost records and appropriate financial advice before committing to a margin-sensitive plan.
The markup-versus-margin guide explains another common source of confusion when reviewing prices.
Make the test specific
Record the item, proposed price, start and end dates, stock available, exposure, and the outcome you will review. Compare units and contribution, not only revenue. If you also change photography, placement, and advertising, do not attribute the result to the markdown alone.
Use genuine reference prices and clear terms. Do not invent a higher “was” price to make the offer appear larger, or imply that a general example is an active store promotion.
Decide the next action from the evidence
If product information is incomplete, fix that first through the appropriate approval process. If a markdown is justified, document the result before repeating it across the range. If it does not work, investigate rather than automatically discounting further.
For future assortment questions, use wholesale inquiries with your exact category and quantity needs. Buying differently may matter more than repeatedly clearing the same mismatch.
